The laughing cavalier isn’t laughing. Nor is he a cavalier. He isn’t even a he. The arrangement of hue and form coupled with what you have learnt in your life so far has led your brain to believe it is seeing something that isn’t actually there. It is the same interconnection of past and present that instills in you the idea that one plus one equals two. It’s only true because we have decided it is.
